Capital One Cup round-up: Liverpool seal nervy shoot-out win as Saints shock Arsenal

Liverpool secured their place in the last-16 of the Capital One Cup after a nerve-shredding penalty shoot-out win over Championship outfit Middlesbrough.
The Reds, desperate to taste victory after back-to-back Premier League defeats, took an early lead at Anfield when 17-year-old Jordan Rossiter fired home on his senior debut after a clanger from Boro goalkeeper Jamal Blackman.
But the second-tier side weren’t going down without a fight and got a deserved equaliser after the break when Adam Reach beat his marker to head in a corner from close-range.
The Merseyside faithful breathed a collective sigh of relief when substitute Suso seemingly sealed victory in the second-half of extra-time with a neat finish.
But a mistake from Kolo Toure gifted Middlesbrough a stoppage-time penalty, with Patrick Bamford confidently netting to make it 2-2 and take it to a shoot-out.
Simon Mignolet saved Boro’s first effort but that was ruled out when Raheem Sterling missed Liverpool fifth, and after a brilliant exhibition of sudden death strikes - with 30 penalties taken in total - it was Albert Adomah's sliced shot which handed Liverpool an extraordinary 14-13 win.
Meanwhile, Arsenal found themselves on the receiving end of the third round’s first major shock as a spirited Southampton came from behind to beat the Gunners 2-1 at the Emirates Stadium.
The hosts started well and took the lead on 14 minutes through Alexis Sanchez's beautiful curling free-kick, but an unfamiliar Arsenal side, Arsene Wenger making ten changes from the team that beat Aston Villa 3-0 at the weekend, then crumbled.
The Saints were soon awarded a penalty after a foul on debutant Sadio Mane, with striker Dusan Tadic coolly slotting from the spot.
And a 35-yard screamer from full-back Nathaniel Clyne just before the break proved the winning goal, as Southampton held on in a closely-fought second half to seal their progression.
Meanwhile, Everton’s defensive woes continue as they were beaten 3-0 at Swansea, with Nathan Dyer, Gylfi Sigurdsson and substitute Marvin Emnes all finding the net to give former boss Roberto Martinez an unhappy return to the Liberty Stadium.
Staying with Premier League sides, Stoke came from a goal down to overcome Sunderland with a 2-1 win at the Stadium of Light.
Black Cats striker Jozy Altidore scored his first goal in 30 games to put the hosts in front, but former Barcelona defender Marc Muniesa was the unlikely hero for the Potters, with his brace sealing their place in the next round.
Elsewhere, Dan Gosling maintained his fine League Cup goalscoring form as his double led Bournemouth to a 3-0 win over managerless Cardiff, while Fulham saw off a late fightback from Doncaster to secure a 2-1 triumph at Craven Cottage.
MK Dons also continued their amazing cup run, following up their famous 4-0 win over Manchester United by beating Bradford 2-0 to make the last-16 for the first time in their short history.
Capital One Cup third round results:
Arsenal 1-2 Southampton
Cardiff 0-3 Bournemouth

Leyton Orient 0-1 Sheffield United
Liverpool 2-2 Middlesbrough (Liverpool win 14-13 on pens)
