Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho described star player Eden Hazard as ‘special’, after the Belgian put on a dazzling performance to inspire the Blues to victory over Sunderland.
While the 4-3 scoreline suggested a much tighter affair, Hazard ran the show, scoring twice and having a huge hand in another as Mourinho’s men kept within touching distance of league leaders Arsenal.
“I think Hazard, Willian and Mata gave a great
great dynamic to the team and played well,” said the Chelsea boss afterwards. “Hazard was special and gave from the first minute to the last minute. He had so much ambition to beat people, to create, to score, it was an amazing performance.”Mourinho continued by speaking of delight at the efforts of his attack line, who looked dangerous throughout and could have perhaps scored more had it not been for their wastefulness in front of goal.
“It’s very difficult to play quality football because teams are now very strong defensively. I think my team played fantastic football. Creative, beautiful, positive, all of the players playing dynamic and with creativity, I love the way they played.”
He did admit however, that their defensive lapses were frustrating and although his side eventually ran out winners, their work in dealing with set-pieces needs to change.
“One of the basic things in football is to defend set-pieces. One of the easiest things to be successful in is defending them and today we just couldn’t defend.”
