Paul Lambert has been sacked this evening. So, who is going to be the next Aston Villa manager? Here are the people the bookies currently think are the main contenders.
1. Tim Sherwood
Despite being odds-on for the Queens Park Rangers job in recent days, the lack of progress there has led to Sherwood being installed as the early favourite to be the new Villa manager. He did a decent job during his brief stint at Tottenham Hotspur last season, but has no managerial experience beyond that.
2. Michael Laudrup
The former Swansea City manager has been out of work since leaving the Liberty Stadium last season. He was somewhat unfortunate to lose his job with the Swans during a gruelling Europa League season and has proven he can do a job in the Premier League. His brand of football would instantly get Lambert’s detractors onside.
3. Mark Warburton
Warburton has done a very impressive job with Brentford, but is rumoured to be heading for the exit due to disagreements with the club’s hierarchy over appointments to his coaching staff. He was expected to see out the season, but the offer of the Villa job might change that.
4. Roy Keane
Lambert’s one-time assistant quit his post to concentrate on his job with the Republic of Ireland, but amid rumours of a bust-up with the players. Would Villa’s hierarchy see him as the man to shake the squad into action?
5. Jurgen Klinsmann
The USA coach has shorter odds than he usually does when Premier League posts become available. It remains to be seen if that is based on any solid information, but the bookies seem to think the former Tottenham striker is in with a shot.
6. Harry Redknapp
Redknapp recently quit his QPR job claiming his knees were stopping him from performing his duties. Taking the Villa job would blow that story out of the water, but the bookies seem to think he is in the mix. The 67-year-old would’t be a long-term appointment.
7. Paul Clement
While his name includes many of the same letters, this would be a departure from Lambert. Carlo Ancelotti’s English assistant is starting to be linked with a move away from Real Madrid to forge his own managerial career. He is thought to be in with a shout of the Villa job.
8. Neil Lennon
Despite only recently taking over at Championship side Bolton Wanderers, Lennon has been instantly linked with a move to Villa Park. He has impressed at Bolton, continuing the good work he did at Celtic.
9. Murat Yakin
The former Switzerland international is currently in charge of Russian side Spartak Moscow. He carved out a good reputation with his achievements in charge of Basel.
10. Sean Dyche
There are rumours that Villa will aim to poach Sean Dyche from relegation battle rivals Burnley. The Clarets are currently a place below Villa in the Premier League table, but Dyche did incredibly well to achieve promotion from the Championship last season and, given his budget, to avoid being cut adrift this term.
