The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adeboye has stated that the rising number of unemployed graduates in the country is due to the use of obsolete curriculum by Nigerian Universities. Pastor Adeboye, who is also a visitor to Redeemers University of Nigeria, RUN, stated this at the university’s sixth convocation of ceremony held at its permanent site in Ede, Osun State on Thursday. Pastor Adeboye’s speech was read at the ceremony by Pastor Johnson Odesola. In the speech, Pastor Adeboye said that the nine-year-old university had already started to impact positively on the society, adding that its graduates had been contributing to the development of humanity across the world. He called on universities in Nigeria to come up with ideas that could make their products job creators. He said, “From a single university in 1948, there are now over 37 federal universities, 37 state universities and over 50 private universities, mostly offering general courses with some specialising in agriculture and technology. “However, there are hardly enough jobs for the graduates, as well as the fact that some of the graduates are not employable by the curriculum and skills that produced them. “We have problems with securing jobs for young people and most of our productive sectors, such as agriculture, mining, solid minerals and small scale industries are still primitive in approach to leverage on the evolving global technologies to compete favourably in the global market. “These problems have persisted and burgeoning because the universities are largely out of synchronisation with the society. Hence, we need to generate initiatives, ideas and momentum to transform our society. “Increasingly discovered in the labour market places, our universities continue to issue bland certificates to graduates who are barely literate, if we take literacy to be the ability to read and write. “The education is bland and not tied to the need of the society. Education must be woven into life with a common thread running through life and society.” Pastor Adeboye, however, said that RUN was committed to being an ideal citadel of learning and centre of excellence in all ramifications. He thanked the Timi of Ede, Oba Muniru Lawal, for his commitment towards the realisation of the relocation of the university to the permanent site. The Chairman of Board of Trustees of the university, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo (SAN), said that the university had become outstanding within the short time it was established. He said RUN had continued to receive commendations from the Federal Government and international agencies for the role it played in containing the Ebola virus in Nigeria. The Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof. Debo Adeyewa, said that the convocation was the first to be held at the institution’s permanent site in Ede. He added that 28 graduates made First Class Honours, out of 598 convocating students.
