Ahead of the elections in February, advocacy group, EiE Nigeria is organizing a Presidential and Governorship election debate series called "The Peoples' Debate"

"The Peoples' Debate", hosted by EiE Nigeria in partnership with GenVoices, GEMSTONE and the Nigerian Global Shapers Hubs (Lagos, Abuja, Calabar, Ibadan & Kano) will hold in Lagos, Plateau, Kaduna, Imo, Rivers, Taraba as well as a Presidential debate in Abuja. The debates are also supported by organizations like Google, Facebook, Channels TV and many others. CEO of Channels Television, John Momoh and popular TV personality, Ebuka Obi Uchendu have been confirmed to moderate some of the debates. Other moderators will be announced soon.

BOMB BLAST IN MAIDUGURI MARKET

A recent suicide bombing blast at a poultry market in Maiduguri in Borno State capital, Saturday, has killed not less than 20 people and injured 18 others, witnesses have said.

Members of the local vigilante, known as the Civilian JTF, told Premium times they saw 20 bodies after the attack.

The bodies were counted as the Civilian JTF fighters arrived the scene to help with rescue effort. 

The explosion occured less than six weeks after the same market was attacked by suicide bombers, occurred at 12:20 P.M. Nigerian time, residents and security officials said.

The attack sparked panic across the Borno state capital, with some residents scampering home for safety.

The spokesperson of the Borno Police, Gideon Jibrin, confirmed the explosion.

NO ONE ENDORSE BUHARI - EX MEND COMMANDERS

Reaffirming the support of ex-militants in the region for the second term bid of President Jonathan, Reuben who is now a Pastor, said: “MEND ceased to exist from the day we all keyed into the amnesty programme of the Federal Government,” adding that what they had as Jomo Gbomo was a pseudonym used by the ex-agitators to prosecute their crusade as MEND years back. “We challenge the Jomo Gbomo to show his face on a national television the way we will do, as we have always done. Since we left the creeks, we have integrated into the society, contributing to the development of the country. We have stopped all forms of militant activities under any guise, including MEND

activities.” He added that at the moment there was nothing like Jomo Gbomo or MEND, stressing that they owned MEND and also collapsed it after they embraced the Federal Government’s amnesty programme. “We have read and heard of reports in the media on the purported endorsement of the APC presidential candidate, Buhari, and have decided to inform the public that we, the former leaders of militant camps, who owned and controlled the activities of MEND, did not and could not have endorsed Buhari as our candidate. “We are aware that the APC and their presidential candidate are desperate for power and are ready to do anything to mislead the public as part of their desperate efforts to take over power this year. But it is criminal to use the name of MEND to score a cheap point and deceive the public. “For the avoidance of doubt, let us put it clearly that we owned MEND and we never endorsed Buhari. Neither Buhari nor MEND can shave our head in our absence.”

GOV KWANKWASO SWORE IN JUSTICE PATRICIA MAHMOD

Gov. Rabiu Kwankwaso of Kano on Friday swore in, Justice Patricia Mahmoud, as the Acting Chief Judge of the state. Patricia, who is the second woman to serve in that capacity, succeeded, Justice Shehu Atiku, who retired on Friday after attaining the statutory retirement age of 65. Kwankwaso urged the chief judge to endeavour to reinvigorate the state judiciary by ensuring justice for all and sundry in the state. The governor assured her of the support of the executive and legislature, adding that the three arms of government needed to collaborate to achieve their objectives. Responding, Patricia thanked the governor for giving her the opportunity to serve the state.

Pst ADEBOYE BLAST NIGERIAN EDUCATION.

The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adeboye has stated that the rising number of unemployed graduates in the country is due to the use of obsolete curriculum by Nigerian Universities. Pastor Adeboye, who is also a visitor to Redeemers University of Nigeria, RUN, stated this at the university’s sixth convocation of ceremony held at its permanent site in Ede, Osun State on Thursday. Pastor Adeboye’s speech was read at the ceremony by Pastor Johnson Odesola. In the speech, Pastor Adeboye said that the nine-year-old university had already started to impact positively on the society, adding that its graduates had been contributing to the development of humanity across the world. He called on universities in Nigeria to come up with ideas that could make their products job creators. He said, “From a single university in 1948, there are now over 37 federal universities, 37 state universities and over 50 private universities, mostly offering general courses with some specialising in agriculture and technology. “However, there are hardly enough jobs for the graduates, as well as the fact that some of the graduates are not employable by the curriculum and skills that produced them. “We have problems with securing jobs for young people and most of our productive sectors, such as agriculture, mining, solid minerals and small scale industries are still primitive in approach to leverage on the evolving global technologies to compete favourably in the global market. “These problems have persisted and burgeoning because the universities are largely out of synchronisation with the society. Hence, we need to generate initiatives, ideas and momentum to transform our society. “Increasingly discovered in the labour market places, our universities continue to issue bland certificates to graduates who are barely literate, if we take literacy to be the ability to read and write. “The education is bland and not tied to the need of the society. Education must be woven into life with a common thread running through life and society.” Pastor Adeboye, however, said that RUN was committed to being an ideal citadel of learning and centre of excellence in all ramifications. He thanked the Timi of Ede, Oba Muniru Lawal, for his commitment towards the realisation of the relocation of the university to the permanent site. The Chairman of Board of Trustees of the university, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo (SAN), said that the university had become outstanding within the short time it was established. He said RUN had continued to receive commendations from the Federal Government and international agencies for the role it played in containing the Ebola virus in Nigeria. The Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof. Debo Adeyewa, said that the convocation was the first to be held at the institution’s permanent site in Ede. He added that 28 graduates made First Class Honours, out of 598 convocating students.

Arik Air Business Class Passenger Caught Stealing During Flight

A Nigerian passenger travelling on Business Class from Abuja to the Southeastern state of Enugu aboard Arik Air ‎has been caught stealing from another passenger during flight.
According to PM NEWS, the suspect, Mbah Mike, was caught on 28 November and handed over to security operatives at the airport, said a source close to Arik Air.
“On November 28, 2014, a passenger on board Arik Air flight W3 410 from Abuja to Enugu was caught meddling with the bag of another passenger during flight.
“The passenger left his seat on 3C and moved to overhead locker on seat number 1 D/F, opened the locker and was meddling with a bag. It was found that the bag belonged to another business class passenger. His own two bags were in the locker over his seat on 3C.
“The passenger who had his name on the boarding pax as MBAH MIKE was handed over the Security Agents at the Akanu Ibiam Airport, Enugu on arrival of the flight for interrogation,” the source said.
Mbah, who speak good English, refused to make written statements.
“The passenger whose bag he was seen meddling with informed that his money was still intact but two other passengers reported that their money was missing.”

The case was transferred to Airport Police Command, Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu station.
“During interrogations, it was found thatMbah Mike (might not be the real name) of the suspect, as he could not give any information about the company whose identity card he holds.
“He said the identity card was forged to enable him board the flight to Enugu as he lost his original identity cards. No document found on him has any name like Mbah Mike.
“Complimentary cards and one other document found on him bears the nameNDU WALTER CHUKS (Managing Director, WACHUNDU Oil & Gas services),” the source explained.
He said his oral statement recorded by the police indicates that he has no known home in Nigeria as he shuttles between Congo, Abuja and Lagos supplying assorted wine and spirits to clients.
“He claims he is still seeking for a home, while using his shop in Lagos at the moment as his home. His wife and three kids lives in London according to the source.
“He is still in police custody and is expected to be charged to court in Enugu on January 16, 2015,” the source said.

JAMES BOND ACTOR DIES

James Bond Actor Kan Bonfils Dies During Theatre Rehearsals

Kan Bonfils, an actor who appeared in major movie franchises James Bond and Star Wars, has died, after collapsing during rehearsals for his new play.

Kan Bonfils was rehearsing for Dante’s Inferno, which was due to open at The Rag Factory in London this week.

Members of the production’s Craft Theatre company and paramedics were unable to resuscitate Bonfils. Chris Hislop, the company’s spokesman, said the cast and crew were devastated by the death.
”Kan collapsed during a rehearsal and the director Rocky Rodriguez Jr performed CPR on location.

Mr Hislop added: “The entire company are in shock. There is absolutely severe sadness, it is a real tragedy.”

Bonfils was due to play a number of roles in the physical production of Dante’s Inferno, with the production still hoping to go ahead with its opening later this week, with another actor from the company taking Bonfil’s place in the ensemble cast.

Bonfil is best known for his supporting roles in major movies. He played a “henchman” in 2012’s Skyfall with Daniel Craig and Isagura in 1997’s Tomorrow Never Dies with Pierce Brosnan. He also appeared as Jedi master Saesee Tiin in Star Wars: Episode 1 The Phantom Menace (1999). The actor also appeared on the big screen in the likes of Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle Of Life (2003), Batman Begins (2005) as well as playing the lead in the London Palladium production of The King & I, opposite Elaine Paige.
