CHELSEA STAYS ATOP PREMIER LEAGUE

Jose Mourinho accused West Ham United of playing ‘19th century football’ when they drew at Chelsea last season, but it never looked as though history would repeat itself at Stamford Bridge.
But, while that may have been the only medieval tactic on show, in truth the visitors were hung, drawn and quartered by their vastly superior opponents.
The first half was all Chelsea, and the only surprise was they went in only 1-0 up at the break, courtesy of John Terry’s 31st minute tap-in after Diego Costa had headed Cesc Fabregas’ corner down towards the far post.
By then, however, they could have been out of sight.
Oscar should have fired them ahead after just four minutes, but he blasted over from close range after Willian’s centre was allowed to drift across the front of the Hammers’ six-yard box.
And the visitors had goalkeeper Adrian to thank for keeping them in the game during the opening 45 minutes.
The Spaniard has been one of the most consistent goalkeepers in the top-flight this season, and he proved his class with a string of fine saves, the pick of the bunch being a strong block to deny Gary Cahill from close range, and a full length diving save to his left to turn Nemanja Matic’s curling shot side of the post.
His opposite number meanwhile, Thibaut Courtois, was little more than a spectator as West Ham failed to muster a single attack worthy of the name in the first half.
And the pattern of the second period largely followed that of the first as the Blues continued to dominate.
West Ham did at least make it slightly more awkward for them to get into their free-flowing style in the early skirmishes following the re-start, but they were unable to halt the tide for long.
Adrian again had to be at his best, saving brilliantly to prevent first Hazard, and then Oscar, from extending the hosts’ advantage.
But he was helpless to prevent Costa stretching the lead in the 62nd minute with a goal of sublime quality.
The Spaniard received the ball from Hazard, twisted one way and then the other to wrong foot three defenders, before firing his left foot across Adrian and into the far corner of the net.
That settled the game as a contest, although West Ham did almost pull a goal back with their first genuine shot of the match, when substitute Morgan Amalfitano smashed his effort against the post.
But Chelsea stood firm to keep the pressure on Manchester City.

NO MORE GAMES - MAYWEATHER

Los Angeles (AFP) - US boxer Floyd Mayweather says he is willing to fight Manny Pacquiao next May in a blockbuster world title fight but only if he receives a much bigger share of the purse.
The 37-year-old Mayweather (47-0, 26 KOs) said his is ready to reach out to Pacquiao's people with the hope that the expected richest fight in boxing history can be held on May 2.Speaking to Showtime Sports on Friday night, Mayweather said he wants his next fight to be against Filipino star Pacquiao, who is coming off an impressive win over Chris Algieri last month in Macau, China.
"We want the fight, we are ready," Mayweather said. "Let's make it happen on May 2. Mayweather versus Manny Pacquiao. Let's do it.
"I am not ducking or dodging any opponent. Bob Arum is stopping the fight.
"I wanted that fight a long time ago and I am just waiting on them."
The two were long-time rivals as the "best pound-for-pound" boxers of their generation, but the dream fight has never materialized to the disappointment of the boxing world.
Mayweather did not go into financial details but he has insisted in the past that he receive the majority of the purse, especially the lucrative pay-per-view revenues.
In 2012 there was speculation that a fight between the two could lead to the first $200 million purse in boxing history with much of that money coming from pay-per-view sales.
At one point Pacquiao says Mayweather offered him a $40 million purse on the condition Mayweather would keep the pay-per-view money, which would have amounted to more than double what Pacquiao received.
Previous talks were also scuttled because Mayweather says Pacquiao (57-5-2, 38 KOs) refused to submit to random blood testing.
Critics of Mayweather have accused him of ducking the 35-year-old Pacquiao for years, saying that his lopsided money demands were just a way to scuttle talks. The undefeated Mayweather even admitted before one of his recent Las Vegas fights that he "hand picks" his opponents.
- 'Ducking us for years' -
But on Friday he was singing a different tune, calling out his rival and insisting it was Pacquiao who is ducking him not the other way around.
"Let's make this fight happen. Bob Arum and Manny Pacquiao you guys have been ducking us for years.
"We are tired of you guys fooling the public, fooling the critics.
"We tried to make the fight happen before and you guys didn't want to take random blood and urine testing so that's why the fight didn't happen. Then I offered you $40 million and then you didn't want to make the fight happen.
"You lost twice now and you are coming back begging for the same money. That is not going to happen."
May 2 is the Cinco de Mayo holiday weekend when Mayweather normally fights in the United States.
Mayweather also hinted Friday that this could be his last fight, though he has said that before each of his last few title fights in Las Vegas as a way to boost ticket sales.
"I want to go out with a bang," he said...(culled from)

Abou Diaby, Laurent Koscielny, Nacho Monreal, Mikel Arteta, Aaron RamseyJack WilshereMesut Ozil and Theo Walcott will all be absent for Alan Pardew's trip to London.
But despite the ever increasing injury problems at the club, Wenger has not promised to enter the transfer market in January when the window reopens.
"If everybody is fit and available, we don't need to go into the transfer market," said Wenger.
"But we have to consider that there could be a question mark with Koscielny's fitness and we have to go out on the transfer market.
"There will be very little activity, because all the big clubs want to keep their players, and it will be as usual quiet in the first three weeks and a bit frenetic in the last three or four days."

MANCHESTER UNITED MANAGER NOT MY BUSINESS

Manchester United assistant manager Ryan Giggs claims he is NOT thinking about taking full control of the club anytime soon.
The former Red Devils star was handed the reins on a temporary basis last season, following David Moyes’ departure from Old Trafford.
He had been tipped to take on the job full-time but the United board opted for Dutchman Louis van Gaal, with the 40-year-old duly appointed as his assistant after deciding to hang up his boots.
Many believe the Welshman is being groomed as a potential successor to the former Barcelona and Bayern Munich man but Giggs claims he is only on the first rung of the ladder.
“I’m learning all the time,” he told talkSPORT. “The more I learn the better prepared I am for whatever I do, wherever that may be.
“Taking over at Man United is not something I’m thinking of though. I loved the experience last season, it was the best ever.
“You can do all the coaching badges and leadership stuff but actually being there for three weeks was invaluable. I’m serving my apprenticeship again.”
United have struggled to be consistent so far this season but a good result against Arsenal has seen them climb into fourth.
And Giggs claims a fully fit squad will show Van Gaal how good his side actually is.
“We’re not too far away,” he added. “We’ve just got to get that consistency.
“When you look at Chelsea, who are top of the league, their team selection has been consistent all season. We haven’t been able to do that.
“Who knows what we’re capable of until we get that consistency? We need 20-25 players to choose from week in and week out.
“When we get that, then we really gauge how well we’re going to do.”

CHELSEA WILL NOT GO UNBEATEN

Chelsea will NOT emulate the Invincibles and go the season unbeaten.
That’s the view of ex-Blues midfielder and assistant manager, Ray Wilkins, who watched Jose Mourinho’s side smash Schalke 5-0 in the Champions League on Tuesday night.
The west London club are yet to taste defeat this season and look imperious both domestically and in Europe.
But Wilkins claims a season-long campaign without a loss is beyond his former side.
“I’ve always said it’s impossible,” he told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast show. “I don’t think they’ll go the season undefeated.
“They’ll come up against a club, when they’re a little bit tired after their travels, and someone will turn them over.
“They’re playing some exquisite stuff though.
